*In 1907, the "Memoirs" and the archives of General Makriyannis were published in Athens by Yiannis Vlachogiannis. The echoes of the 1821 Revolution, the events of the Capodistrian period, and the reign of Otto had not yet faded, yet no one could have imagined the prestige that Makriyannis's work, particularly his "Memoirs," would acquire during the twentieth century. Its historical value was obvious, as Makriyannis recounted his military and political actions and further explained the reasons that had led him to specific acts. However, the prestige of his work is due not only to the valuable historical information but also to other reasons, which make the text of the "Memoirs" a unique reference point for modern Greek culture.
